Understanding Hair Restoration

PRP hair restoration is a treatment that can help improve hair growth and density for people with hair loss and thinning. This procedure is unique in that it involves a patient blood draw to create a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) solution. This PRP, or PRFM (platelet-rich fibrin matrix), is then injected into the scalp in small doses to jumpstart new growth.

Whether you’re dealing with thinning hair, postpartum hair loss, a receding hairline, or other hair growth issues, PRP hair restoration can help drastically improve the appearance of your hair.

What is PRP Hair Restoration?

Platelet-rich plasma has been used in medical procedures since the 1980s but became an option for hair restoration around 2006. Over the last decade or so, professionals have worked to improve this therapy, and it is now a popular solution for hair loss around the world.

At Flora Aesthetics and Wellness, our licensed professionals discuss your goals for hair growth and create individual PRP treatment plans. Our PRP injections promote new hair growth by repairing damaged areas of the scalp and introducing restorative compounds like protein.

How The Procedure Works

The PRP hair restoration procedure differs slightly from other wellness therapies because it involves a patient blood draw. PRP injections can be completed in three steps:

  • Blood Draw

First, in a PRP hair restoration session, a licensed professional draws a small amount of your own blood into a vial.

  • Plasma Separation

Next, they place the vial of blood in a centrifuge for processing. This step separates the red blood cells from the platelet-rich and platelet-poor plasma.

  • Injection

Once the blood is separated, your esthetician will collect the platelet-rich plasma into a syringe and inject that mixture in small doses to your scalp.

After the procedure, you should wait at least 6 hours before washing your hair. When you do shower, be sure to use gentle and moisturizing hair products. Avoid swimming, steam rooms, excessive exercise, and blood-thinning medication for at least a month after treatment.

Benefits of PRP Hair Restoration

PRP hair restoration is a fairly simple procedure that can drastically improve hair growth and density. PRP injections can help create thicker hair follicles, fill in balding patches, restore hair lines, and reverse the effects of hair loss or thinning.

Who is it For?

PRP hair restoration is for anyone experiencing hair loss or thinning hair. Some common candidates for hair restoration include:

  • Men dealing with male androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness)
  • Women with postpartum hair loss
  • Women with hormonal hair issues like PCOS
  • Men with a receding hairline
  • People with thinning hair due to age

Expected Results of PRP

Individuals will respond differently to PRP injections, but several clinical studies have found that this therapy can promote hair growth and thickness over time. Many clients see thinning patches fill in after PRP hair restoration and experience the slowing of hair loss considerably.

PRP injections can take time to see improvement and may require several repeat treatments. Some see results in as little as a few months, while others take a year or longer of consistent therapy.

Are there Side Effects?

Most clients do well after a PRP hair restoration appointment, but there are some possible side effects from this therapy. Some studies have found that PRP injections may cause itchiness, headache, temporary swelling, and some discoloration on the scalp.
